CHEAP THR!LL is a post-script to Ireland’s ‘beautiful’ recent past, as the poster boys and girls of
European success. Our babylon has fallen, the I.M.F. et al. pick over the remains of the financial
institutions, while our government figure out how they cut the last gristle from almost clean bones.
We wonder where do we go from here? On the edge of Europe with no significant industry and few
natural resources to speak of, where indeed?
This body of work speaks of a profound shock and ‘grief’ at our changing fortunes. It casts a
darkly humorous view of the situation, the oscillating moods of depression and denial, caution and
optimism. Should we put our spare cash under the mattress for a rainy day? –or spend it on cheap
thrills if only to remember how things once were, or perhaps will be again!
NO!DEA (Declan Greaney) has been painting and exhibiting for many years. He has exhibited in
Temple Bar Gallery, Ardgillan Castle, the Bar Council of Ireland, Science Gallery and the National
Botanic Gardens. His work is in the Irish State collection, the collections of the National Botanic
Gardens and Trinity College Dublin, and in private collections at home and overseas.
This is his first solo show of figuative Art under the name NO!DEA.
The Artist wishes to acknowledge and thank Exchange Dublin for their co-operation and support in
the use of the venue.
